I have to admit, I have never been much of a hostel guy. I prefer to earn and burn points at hotels, and maybe enjoy an occasional upgrade to a nicer room, but the idea of hostels has always been intriguing to me. Especially for young solo travelers, whether on a budget or not, it’s a great way to meet people from all over the world.
Well, I didn’t know this, but there are annual awards given out by Hostelworld, called the Hoscars, that recognize the best hostels from around the world, ranking them in categories like location and size, to the best hostels for solo travelers and groups.
I took a look through some of the winners, and I must say, some of these look very nice! And cheap! This is one of the award winners, in one of my favorite cities in the world, The Roadhouse Prague in the Czech Republic.
It’s easy to see how The Roadhouse could be voted the Best Small Hostel with a 9.9 out of 10 rating from well over 500 reviews! I checked the rates, and granted this is winter, but only $21.43 per night in January.
One of the winners for Best Hostel for Solo Travelers was The Soul Kitchen in St. Petersburg, Russia. It also looks pretty nice.
Final Thoughts:
I had never really considered hostels, even when I was younger, but being an avid traveler I was intrigued by this article that highlighted some of these very nice hostels. It was an interesting read, but still not enough to make me abandon my hotel strategy. I guess miles and points have spoiled me, but if you’re the young and adventurous type of traveler it might be worth checking out some of the award winners here!
